Selecting your source of wood is a process that cannot be based on pricing only. Of course we all want to release an affordable finished product, but it is important to consider that the wood business has had a dark history of illegal loggers and reckless buyers. Although, on a much smaller scale today, they are an ongoing threat, not just to our business but to our planet. Ignorance is not a valid excuse anymore.
The new regulations in Europe and in South East Asia, as well as the implementation of eco certificates like FSC , PEFC and SVLK are a huge step in the right direction. Still, we have to bear in mind that we cannot afford any more of the past bad practice. We need to actively work on selecting our source in a responsible manner:
- Collect your own information. Search, discuss and compare data. You love your finished product and therefore you want it as far as possible to avoid illegality, criminal bands, child labor, animal abuse, destruction of primary forests and wildlife.
- Talk to experts. We are all concerned about the threats that affect our business (and our shared future) and we are glad to share about where you should not go for sourcing.
- Hire a timber consultant that sometimes says ‘no’. Because not everything is possible and not everything is acceptable.
The price is important but it cannot be the only factor to be considered. By paying a little higher for the right source, you can make a substantial positive difference.
