Stopping illegal logging is our duty and probably the only way to do it is by creating a global cooperation network. The EU TR is a regulation from 2013 that is making this cooperation possible:
- Imported wood needs to show all legal documents to be presented to enter Europe, but it does not stop there, the legal documents are those ‘according to the country of origin’. The importer must do a due diligence to get information of the origin of the lumber and the supply chain. Lack of information or unclear origin results in a big fine for the importer, like in this recent case.
- We all can (and should!) contribute to the EUTR by denouncing the suspicious cases we may find: timber that we suspect it has been sourced in protected areas, databases that show irregularities, providing as many contrasted evidences as possible.
Get involved and become an agent of change.
